picture me {im}perfectly.the first day back.

well, it happened.
summer is officially over.
i could not believe that we were walking back to school…
and that our summer is finished already!

while the bigs were gone,
i enjoyed many a thought in my head.
i don’t think i’ve been able to do that
all summer long.

it was nice.
it was quiet.
and L and i kept each other company
(he starts in a couple of weeks).

and you know what?
i really, really enjoyed it.
so picture me {im}perfectly because
i am a much better mom
when my children are not glued to my side
every moment of every day.

i am refreshed,
i am happy to see them
and i am ready to hear every tiny detail
of D’s latest inventions
and i am ready to have K tell me every little thing she saw.
i really don’t know how you homeschooling moms do it.

and for some reason,
(i assume i was frantically doing this task)
i chose to write “2nd” on D’s paper and “first on K’s.
go figure.

picture me {im}perfectly.this summer

now that the summer is nearly gone,
i am able to reflect on what went down
over the last few months.

we spent much of the summer
in a rush.
in a hurry.
scurrying from here to there
and from there to here.

so i’ve written a note to myself
for next summer
so that it doesn’t look at all
like the summer we’ve just had.

dear future self,
do not schedule many therapies for L next summer.
and even if you think it makes the most sense,
do not, i repeat, do not
schedule anything in the mornings.
especially if they fall earlier
than you typically have to be out of the house
during the school year.
the mornings of nothingness
are absolutely precious and lovely.

moments caught
like the photo below
were rare.
far too rare.

i never really ever mop.
and right as i had mopped the first half
of the kitchen floor
(aka wiped  down with a wet rag)
someone who shall remain nameless
spilled half of the yogurt container
all over the floor.
this is probably why i don’t mop.

the other day it was evident
that we all needed more grace in our home.

you know how those days go
(every day around here).

so i suggested that we all put on more love
to which D replied,
“i’ve got an idea!
how about nobody talks!”

picture me {im}perfectly.packing

not too long ago,
we got to sneak away on a trip
(much, much more on that soon).
B had to stay home and work
so it was just me and the kids.

i’m frugal
(this can also sometimes
be known as stubborn)
so we didn’t check any bags.

we did pack really lightly though:
3 outfits,
counting what we wore traveling,
per person.

but packing for the trip
reminded me of childbirth.
and not in a good way.
i wanted to give up
or wish the task upon someone else… anyone else.

but somehow, everything we needed got packed
and then we were off.

if you’re a mother,
then you know that
traveling with children
is difficult.
it’s not really fun.
i would go as far as to say it’s not fun at all.
but i think every parent knows that
going into those sorts of adventures.

this photo was taken on our shuttle
after i completely broke down at the airport.
with only one leg to go.

so i just want you to keep all of this in mind.
always remembering to picture me {im}perfectly.

i just got to do
a fun little shoot
for a dear friend of mine
and her family.
(more on that on friday.)

i would
never
ever
want you to think
that my life
is anything but the real thing.

so yeah, my three kids
came to the beach with me
to do what only they call
“help” during the photo shoot.

i cannot imagine
(actually, i can imagine and it’s awful)
what it would have been like
if Auntie B hadn’t come to the rescue
and help wrangle my “helpful” children.
(and thanks to Auntie B for this photo!)

i don’t know what it is
about thank you notes
but it takes me
forever
to get them written
and to send them off.

and when they’re from the kids?
oh goodness.
just add many, many days to that.

and believe it or not,
but i am just now getting D’s thank you notes off.
from december.
of 2012.
i know.
awful, right?
awful.

are almost done with school for this year
and i’m sort of freaking out.
actually, i’m really freaking out.

i want this summer to be fun
and intentional
and filled with so much joy
and not filled with a ton of therapies and doc visits.
(but we all know that all of that is way out of my control).

and my biggest goal?
to stay neutral.

with the dishes.
and the laundry.
and the messes.
oh, the messes.

this is a lofty goal.
i recognize that.
but i know that it will make for
a much more pleasant summer.

i’ve been asking dear friends:
how do you stay sane during summer?
how do you get anything done?
how are you not freaking out?
because i am!

i long for moments like this for our summer.
where they are all working on the same project.
it’s rare.
oh, so rare at our house.
but how i love it.
how i long for it.
